How it started
A rainy Thursday, a diner on the corner, and a booth by the window that we still ask for. You ordered the cheesecake. I ordered whatever you were having. That has been my strategy for five years, and it has never once failed.
Some people find love. We just kept showing up to the same booth.

You never fill a silence just to fill it. When you speak, I lean in. Everyone does.
On my shoulder in a crowded room. On the wheel on long drives. Always finding mine in the dark of a movie theater.
You defend the people you love like a lawyer with a personal grudge. I hope I never have to be on the other side.

Five years, five moments
The diner by the window. The cheesecake. Your number on a napkin, which I still keep in my wallet.
The first apartment with the broken radiator. Pizza on moving boxes, coats on in bed, laughing every night.
Big Sur. The cliffs at seven in the morning, and you standing far too close to the edge.
The hard one. The hospital waiting room. Your hand in mine the whole night.
This one. Quieter, steadier, and somehow the best so far.

Five years is not a long time. It is just long enough to know that I would choose you again in every version of this life: the one where we are rich, the one where the radiator never gets fixed, the one where we grow old and argue about the thermostat.
